Frequently Asked Questions About Trauma Therapy
Will I have to talk about everything that happened?
At Hope Harbour Psychotherapy, you’re not required to share every detail of your trauma if it doesn’t feel comfortable for you. We prioritize creating a safe space where you can explore your feelings and experiences at your own pace. Therapy is about finding the right balance between addressing what’s necessary for healing and respecting your boundaries. At Hope Harbour, we believe that clients need to be full collaborators with their Therapists rather than passive recipients of therapy. You’ll work with your Therapist to determine what feels right for you and how to approach discussing your trauma in a way that supports your healing process.
Is what I am feeling normal? The traumatic event is over.
Many individuals don’t realize that a traumatic event can continue to affect them long after it has passed, even if they have successfully survived it. When triggers evoke memories, we may reexperience the feelings of threat or danger from the moment of the event, even if we don’t have a conscious memory of it. Without understanding the reasons behind their reactions, most people assume that something is wrong with them. In therapy, you will discover that your reactions are understandable, given what you have gone through.
I don’t have many memories of my childhood or the trauma. Can I still do trauma therapy?
It is common for many survivors of trauma to have only a fragmented story of what happened or no straightforward story at all. It may seem like you don’t remember anything. However, you may not realize that when you suddenly feel startled, afraid, ashamed and want to withdraw, you are remembering.
Trauma is remembered emotionally and in the body more than it is remembered in a narrative form that can be expressed verbally. It is likely that without having the memories in words or pictures, what you feel when you are triggered is the memory. You may be remembering a lot more than you think you do!
In therapy, we will work together to see patterns of triggers. This will help you learn what a here-and-now emotional reaction and a feeling or body memory are. Think of therapy as a way to help your body understand that you are “here” and not there.
What if I get worse before I get better?
It’s not uncommon to feel more distressed as you start trauma therapy, especially when processing difficult memories. This temporary increase in distress is a normal part of the healing process. Trauma treatment is designed to help you process and integrate traumatic memories in a way that ultimately leads to relief and healing. Your Therapist will work closely with you to ensure that you’re supported and have effective coping strategies. The goal is to help you navigate these feelings safely and gradually reduce the intensity of your trauma symptoms over time.
