Online Therapy in Ontario

What is Online Therapy?

Online therapy is therapy delivered through a secure video session, from wherever you’re comfortable. The kitchen table, your home office, or your car on a lunch break can each become a place where the harder conversations feel possible.

Most people are surprised by how quickly the connection forms over video, and many find it easier to open up from home, where the hardest part of therapy, starting to talk, feels a little less scary. Research consistently shows that online therapy is comparable to in-person care for anxiety, depression, trauma, and many other concerns.

What We Help With

Online therapy supports a wide range of concerns. Our team works with adults, couples, and kids across Ontario, and we tailor each session to what’s going on for you.

Here are some of the areas we can work through in online therapy:

Tools to manage racing thoughts, physical symptoms, and the patterns that keep anxiety running the show. Online therapy gives you a calm, familiar place to do this work.

Support for the heaviness, the disconnection, and the days that feel harder than they should, without the added weight of getting yourself out the door.

A steady, paced approach to processing what happened so it stops shaping what’s happening now. Many clients find that their own space feels safer as they work through trauma.

Care that meets you in the season you’re in, without the pressure of leaving the house with a newborn or coordinating childcare around a session.

Space to figure out what’s draining you, what’s worth holding onto, and what needs to change.

Strategies that work with the way your brain is wired, not against it, and adjustments that make the work easier to stick with.

Approaches that get at the patterns underneath the sleeplessness, including the racing mind, the worry loops, and the daytime habits that quietly feed it.

Online therapy that supports the emotional weight of living with pain, alongside any medical care you’re receiving.

Skills to navigate the relationships that matter to you, at home, at work, and everywhere in between.

Room to sit with loss that hasn’t moved the way you expected, and find your way through at your own pace.

Approaches We Use in Online Therapy

1:1 Online Sessions

Most of our online therapy is one-on-one work between you and your therapist. Same hour, same depth, same care you'd find in person. Just delivered through a secure video session.

Online Couples Therapy

Couples therapy works well online, particularly for partners who travel for work, live in long-distance relationships, or can't sync schedules around childcare and a drive. You both join from wherever you are, together or apart.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

CBT is structured, skill-based, and designed for the kind of focused work that translates well to video. It's one of the most researched approaches for online delivery.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

ACT helps you build a different relationship with difficult thoughts and feelings, and reconnect with what matters most to you.

EMDR Therapy

EMDR can be adapted for online delivery using guided protocols. Your online therapist will walk you through how it works and whether it's a fit for you before you begin.

Mindfulness & Self-Compassion Practices

Practices that help you notice what's happening inside you, in the moment, without getting swept up in it.

Therapy that fits how you live.

At Hope Harbour Psychotherapy, online therapy gives you access to the same therapists, the same approach, and the same care as our in-person work. From anywhere in Ontario.

Frequently Asked Questions About Online Therapy

There’s something meaningful about having a space, and a person, where you can pull the tangled thoughts out of your head, untangle them out loud, and start making some sense of it all. And research consistently shows that it can happen just as well over video as it does in person, and for a lot of people, being at home makes it easier to say the things you’ve been holding onto. It isn’t a lesser version of therapy. It’s a different way to deliver it.

Most people are surprised by how quickly the connection forms. Many of our clients find it easier to open up from home, where they’re already comfortable. There’s something about being in your own space that makes it less daunting to say the hard things. It can feel different at first, but most people settle into it within the first session or two.

Online therapy is a strong fit if you live far from a therapist’s office, have a packed schedule, or find waiting rooms uncomfortable. It works best when you have a quiet, private space and a steady internet connection. If you’re in a serious crisis or don’t have a safe place to talk privately, in-person care at our clinic in Belleville, ON, may be a better starting point. Book a free consultation, and we’ll figure out what’s right for you.

Yes. We use JaneApp, a secure platform built specifically for healthcare. Your sessions are encrypted, private, and confidential. You’ll get a secure link sent to your email before each session, so there’s no waiting room and no chance of running into someone you know.

Yes, and it works well. Research shows online couples therapy is comparable to in-person couples work. The connection you build with your therapist, and the work you do as a couple doesn’t depend on the three of you being in the same room. It’s a particularly good fit for long-distance partners, couples who can’t coordinate childcare around a drive, or anyone who’d rather skip the logistics. You both need a private spot, a steady internet connection, and a place where you won’t be overheard.

Yes. We offer both child therapy and teen therapy through online sessions. Adolescents in particular often prefer the format, since it fits into their schedules and gives them a sense of privacy that an office visit doesn’t always offer. For younger children, online therapy can work well with the right setup and some parent involvement, and we’ll talk through what makes sense for your child during the first conversation.

Our therapists are Registered Psychotherapists, not physicians or psychiatrists, which means we don’t prescribe or manage medication. If medication is something you’d like to explore, your family doctor or a psychiatrist is the right starting point, and many people work with both a therapist and a prescriber at the same time. We’re happy to coordinate with your prescriber so the work we do together fits with the rest of your care.

Not much. A device with a camera and microphone (a phone, tablet, laptop, or desktop all work), a steady internet connection, and a private space where you won’t be overheard. We’ll send you a secure link from JaneApp before your session, and you can click it from any browser to join. There’s no app to install and no software to set up.

It happens, and it’s not the end of the session. If we lose connection, we’ll usually wait a moment and try to reconnect. If the video keeps cutting out, we can switch to a phone call to finish the session or reschedule if needed. Your therapist will walk you through a backup plan at the start of your first session, so you’re not figuring it out in the moment.

Most extended health benefits in Canada cover psychotherapy the same way, whether it’s online or in person. Coverage depends on your plan, your provider, and your therapist’s designation. We’re happy to provide receipts you can submit to your insurance, and if you want to check ahead of time, we recommend looking at your plan’s coverage for “registered psychotherapy” or contacting your provider directly.

Possible Outcomes of Online Therapy

Every person’s path through therapy looks different, and we can’t promise specific outcomes or timelines. What we can say is that online therapy makes it easier to keep showing up, and showing up consistently is what moves the work forward. With time and steady support, you may begin to:

When the barrier to therapy is lower, the work goes further, and hope feels nearer.
